Professional Development Awards

The Community Oncology Program is pleased to offer Professional Development opportunities in oncology. These awards are designed for health professionals affiliated with the Community Oncology Pgoram and to family physicians and nurse practitioners in primary-care practice within Manitoba who would like to enhance their knowledge and skills in cancer care and blood disorders

Eligible areas include, but are not limited to:

  • prevention, screening and early detection, treatment, management and follow-up
  • pain and symptom management
  • chemotherapy and central lines (CVAI) care
  • end-of-life care
  • psychosocial/spiritual and supportive care

Types of Awards

You can apply for:

  • 1-2 weeks of personalized training based on leanring needs - spots may be limited given the context of the pandemic
  • Registration fees for an oncology-related conference or course

Continuing Education Credits

Recipients may apply to their professional organization for credits. Family physicians may apply for self-learning credits from the College of Family Physicians in Canada

Selection of Recipients

Preference will be given to strong applicants who:

  • Have been in their positions for one year or more;
  • Show evidence of a sincere and enthusiastic interest in cancer care/blood disorders;
  • Describe clear and realistic learning objectives in their application.

Expectations and Benefits

All recipients will be encouraged to commit to serving as a cancer-care resource to their community or practice group at the end of the traineeship for a minimum of two years.

Family physicians and nurse practitioners who are successful applicants will be asked to commit to accepting the referral of a minimum of six new cancer patients needing a family physician over the 12 months following the completion of their traineeship. This will assist in the challenge of linking patients with new primary-care providers if they lack one.
