Professional Development Awards

The Community Oncology Program is proud to support healthcare professionals in advancing their knowledge and skills in oncology, blood disorders, and palliative care. These awards provide funding for training opportunities that strengthen cancer care across Manitoba and the Kivalliq Region.

Eligibility

Who Can Apply?

  • Healthcare professionals affiliated with the Community Oncology Program
  • Primary Care Providers in Manitoba or the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut

Eligible areas of training include, but are not limited to:

  • Cancer prevention, screening, and early detection
  • Treatment, management, and follow-up
  • Pain and symptom management
  • Chemotherapy and central venous access device (CVAD) care
  • End-of-life care
  • Psychosocial/spiritual and supportive care

Types of Awards

All awards must be oncology or palliative care related (50% or more of the content).

For Individuals:

  • Personalized training (1–2 weeks based on learning needs; limited spots)
  • Registration fees for oncology-related conferences or courses
  • Certification or re-certification fees for oncology-related programs (up to $500 annually)

For Groups:

  • Registration fees for oncology-related conferences or courses
  • Speaker fees for oncology-related sessions

Continuing Education Credits

Recipients may apply for continuing education credits through their professional organization. Family physicians may apply for self-learning credits from the College of Family Physicians in Canada.

Selection of Recipients

Applicants should discuss their application with their manager prior to submission. If the training is required for their role (per job description), they should seek operational funding rather than PD Award funding.

Preference will be given to strong applicants who:

  • Have been in their position for 1 year or more
  • Demonstrate sincere and enthusiastic interest in cancer care/blood disorders
  • Provide clear and realistic learning objectives
  • Are willing to serve as a resource to colleagues
  • Have explored other funding options
  • Are applying for opportunities related to oncology, blood disorders, or palliative care
  • Have received fewer PD Award funds in the past 3 years

Expectations for Recipients

  • Commit to serving as a cancer care resource in your community for at least 2 years
  • Primary care providers: accept 6+ new cancer patient referrals within 12 months after training.
