CancerCare Manitoba Foundation invites all Manitobans to Take The Challenge!

CancerCare Manitoba Foundation today launched an innovative event designed to motivate Manitobans of all ages to take an active role in their health and well-being while raising funds for all cancers.

Andrew Paterson, Chairman of CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, announced the creation of the Challenge for Life:
a commitment to choosing a healthier lifestyle culminating in a 20 km walk on Saturday, September 27, 2008. "The Foundation is delighted to announce this made-in-Manitoba event in support of all Manitobans and their families living with cancer."

CancerCare Manitoba Foundation also announced that Winnipeg's Hall family will serve as honorary chairs of the 2008 event. The Hall family siblings - Katie, Alison, Nicholas and Thomas - were instrumental in dreaming up the Challenge concept after their mother was treated at CancerCare Manitoba.

"We believe this event gives all Manitobans a unique opportunity to take steps to change their own lives for the better while raising money for a disease that knows no bounds," said Katie Hall. "We are so excited to begin our own fundraising and recruit fellow Challengers. Together we will raise funds that will go towards CancerCare Manitoba's treatment, research, patient care and, our ultimate dream: a cure for cancer!"

Participants in the Challenge commit to two goals: a personal health goal and a fundraising goal. By setting their personal health goal, participants pledge to help reduce their risk of cancer by focusing on five steps: Eat Well, Shape Up, Cover Up, Check Up, and Be Tobacco Free.

"As many as 50% of cancers could be prevented through healthy living," said Dr. Dhali Dhaliwal, President and CEO of CancerCare Manitoba. "Cancer is changing the Canadian landscape because it is now the leading cause of premature loss of life. We need a massive community effort to reverse this trend and, through the Challenge, Manitobans can be part of the solution."

Through their personal fundraising goal of a minimum of $1,000, participants raise funds for research, treatment and patient care at CancerCare Manitoba.
Annitta Stenning, Executive Director of CancerCare Manitoba Foundation added, "This event is exceptional because it's not simply about raising all-important funds for CancerCare Manitoba. More importantly, it's about personal engagement and public commitment to change your life and reduce your risk."

Starting and finishing at Assiniboine Park's Lyric Theatre, the 20km walk will wind its way through some of Winnipeg's most historic neighborhoods. After the walk, Challengers will join together in an end-of-day celebration.
