Smartphone campaign benefits kids with cancer

Gift from TELUS is more than 2.5x larger than previous year

A hugely successful initiative of TELUS and its customers has resulted in a donation of $123,275 to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation in support of pediatric clinical trials.

For every new smartphone activation in Manitoba on the TELUS network, TELUS Phones for Good campaign earmarked $25 to CancerCare Manitoba.

"The CancerCare Manitoba Foundation supports more than 50 per cent of all pediatric clinical trials that take place at CancerCare Manitoba," said Annitta Stenning, Executive Director, CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. "We are so pleased that over these past three years, TELUS and its customers have raised $172,775 that will make a considerable difference in the lives of kids with cancer. Because of this generous gift, we are able to cover a portion of the cost of infrastructure support for these clinical trials as well as the costs associated with conducting the trials."

Clinical trials have played a key role in the remarkable increase in the survival of children with cancer; five year pediatric cancer survival rates have risen to almost 80 per cent, compared to less than 10 per cent in the 1950s. Clinical trials lead to improved treatments and outcomes that may enable children to remain closer to home, thereby easing a financial burden and keeping family, friends and familiar surroundings nearby.

"CancerCare Manitoba is broadening its support to include younger adults and survivors as well," said Dr. Dhali Dhaliwal, President and CEO, CancerCare Manitoba. "Our centre is a national leader with the highest participation rates in pediatric clinical trials. This is possible because of the support from organizations like the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, TELUS and its customers."

"The TELUS Phones for Good campaign enables our customers to help us give where we live while connecting them with new technology and the devices they love," said Jill Schnarr, vicepresident, TELUS Community Investment and Engagement. "Together we are changing lives for youth in our communities. We are grateful for the tremendous support from our customers in Manitoba who have enabled TELUS to provide organizations like CancerCare Manitoba with much needed funds to continue their vital work through pediatric clinical trials."
