CancerCare Manitoba Foundation Chairman retires - Business leader presided over Bears on Broadway

Winnipeg, June 26, 2009 - Andrew B. Paterson, Chairman of the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, has retired after almost a decade at the helm of this esteemed organization.

In announcing his retirement at the Foundation's Annual General Meeting, Mr. Paterson reflected on the enduring generosity and commitment of Manitobans to CancerCare Manitoba. "We are thankful because it takes teamwork to conquer cancer. The Foundation is proud to be part of an outstanding team of dedicated health care professionals, researchers, community partners and donors, all dedicated to ensuring every Manitoban has access to the world's best research, prevention, treatment and care."

During Andrew Paterson's tenure the Foundation realized unprecedented growth, raising $65 million for CancerCare Manitoba. Some of the most noteworthy achievements during his leadership include:
  • Bears on Broadway- the award-winning fundraiser that attracted more than one million visitors to the 62 life-size polar bears, helping raise awareness and more than $600,000 for patient care and support at CancerCare Manitoba
  • The "Bear Facts" Risk Reduction initiative - understanding the burden of cancer was on the rise in our province, Paterson championed a unique campaign designed to educate Manitobans on the steps they can take to reduce their personal risk of cancer
  • The Weekend to End Breast Cancer - which in two years raised several million dollars for breast cancer research and patient care in Manitoba
  • The Challenge for Life 20k Walk - a made-in-Manitoba event that in its second year, recently raised $1.13 million for all cancers and, more importantly, provided Manitobans with the opportunity to take the important steps to improving their health and reducing their personal cancer risk.

Expressing his appreciation, CancerCare Manitoba President and CEO Dr. Dhali Dhaliwal said, "The cancer community owes Andrew Paterson a huge debt of gratitude for helping to attack cancer on many fronts through dedicated leadership and extraordinary commitment."

James Burns, Director Emeritus of Power Corporation and past Chair of the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, joined in acknowledging Mr. Paterson's dedication. "Andrew's term was long and very successful. He put heart and soul, energy and time into the cause. He showed leadership at its finest and we thank and congratulate him on a job well done."

In recognition of his achievements, Andrew Paterson was appointed Director Emeritus of the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.
