Peer Support Team

All members of the award-winning* Peer Support Team at CCMB Breast & Gyne Cancer Centre of Hope have had a breast cancer diagnosis, are a minimum of one year past their diagnosis, and have taken special training to offer effective support and information.

A referral to peer support is processed only with the consent of the Client, since some confidential health information will need to be shared in order to facilitate the match. All Peer Supporters sign the same Pledge of Confidentiality required of all staff within CancerCare Manitoba.

When a referral to Peer Support is received a member of our staff attempts to make a match by medical data (surgery, diagnosis, treatment regimen), as well as age, "lifestyle" and family situation.

Contacts may be one or several, by phone or in-person, depending upon the circumstances and wishes of both Client and Peer Supporter.

* The BCCH Peer Support Team won the Mayor's Volunteer Achievement Award in 2000 and the Premier's Volunteer Achievement Award in 2001
