In the days following your visit, a radiologist (x-ray doctor) will review your mammogram. He or she will determine if your mammogram is normal or if you require further tests. Over 93% of women attending our program have normal results. Of the women who do go for extra tests, most will not have breast cancer.

Will I receive the results?

Within two weeks both you and your doctor will be notified by the BreastCheck telling you the results of your mammogram. Sometimes there is a delay if we have to ask for your previous mammograms from another clinic.

Will I have any problems after the mammogram?

Most women will not have problems after their visit. Some women may experience redness or bruising which usually disappears in a few days. Tearing can sometimes occur because the skin under the breast along the bra line has become very thin. Keeping the area clean and dry will help healing and may prevent future problems. Talk to your doctor if you have rashes, infections, or problems with your breasts that don't go away.

Can all breast cancers be seen on a mammogram?

About 2 in 10 breast cancers are not seen on a mammogram. This is why it is important that you:

  • Have your doctor check your breasts regularly.
  • Know how your breasts normally look and feel.
  • Contact your doctor if you notice any changes in your breasts between check-ups.

When should I return?

Most women will be asked to return to the Program in two years.

Some women may be asked to return in one year. The most common reasons for this are:

  • You have a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer.
  • The radiologist thinks it is best for you to come more often based on their assessment.
  • It is your first time and we don't have other x-ray films to compare.

We will send a letter reminding you when it is time to book your next appointment. Please call us if you do not receive a letter.
