You may be referred to a surgeon, an imaging centre or the WHRA Breast Health Centre to have a breast lump, mass or thickening investigated by one or more of the following procedures.

Imaging Tests:

• provide pictures that help determine the size, shape and makeup of the area
• they are reviewed by radiologists who are experienced in tests related to the breast
• the most common tests are:
  • mammogram
  • ultrasound

Biopsy:

• a test that provides a piece of tissue or cells for examination under a microscope the tissue is reviewed by a pathologist who provides the results or diagnosis in the form of a pathology report the most common biopsies are:
  • fine needle aspiration (FNA)
  • core needle biopsy
  • stereotactic biopsy
  • excisional biopsy
