History:
The Institute of Cell Biology provides a DNA sequencing service. This service is intended exclusively for investigators at the University of Manitoba.
The MICB DNA Sequencing Facility was established in April, 1997 following the acquisition of an ABI Prism 310 DNA Genetic Analyzer.
The initial capacity was 31,000 bases per week at a reagent cost of four cents per base. Subsequent optimizations have improved the throughput to 81,000 bases per week and lowered the costs to one cent per base. With an increased capacity and lower costs we were able to make our facility available to the entire university research community in March of 1998. Since that time our facility has been used by over 40 labs at the MICB and U of M and has sequenced more than 7 million bases. The facility is self-sufficient and provides sequencing service at less than half the cost of most other Canadian facilities. It is currently supervised by Dr. D. Dubik. The Facility was expanded in 2002 to accommodate an increasing demand for sequencing by the Mammalian Functional Genomics Centre. This expansion included the acquisition of a Beckman CEQ8000. This sequencer allows a much higher capacity of 192 samples per 24h period as well as longer runs averaging 600-700 bp.
Services Provided:
As stated above, all sequencing will be done on an ABI 310 Gene Analyzer. Currently, we have a single sequencer with a total weekly capacity of no more than 160 sequences. On average each successful sequencing will provide between 400-550 bases. Results can be provided in hardcopy or digital (e-mail) formats.
Service Procedure:
1) Prepare your samples as described in the Procedure section.
2) Present a completed Request Form with you samples.
3) Bring your Sample and the completed Request Form to ON6042 CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave.
Sample should be place in the RED RACK of the mini -20C freezer. The completed Request Form should be place in the mailbox at the entrance of ON6042.
