  • Respect and protect the right to privacy of the patient and ensure the appropriate use of this confidential health information.
  • Provide an epidemiological base for provincial cancer control activities in the province of Manitoba.
  • Collaborate with national and international agencies on cancer research.

What is Cancer Registration?

Cancer registration may be defined as the process of continuing systematic collection of data on the occurrence and characteristics of reportable neoplasms with the purpose of helping to assess and control the impact of malignancies on the community (from the IARC Scientific Publication - Cancer Registration Principles and Methods). Much of what we know about cancer today comes from cancer registry data.

The Manitoba Cancer Registry

  • CancerCare Manitoba is legally mandated under the Public Health Act to collect, classify and maintain accurate comprehensive information on all cancer cases for the province of Manitoba.
  • The Manitoba Cancer Registry is a population-based central cancer registry.
  • Multiple sources of ascertainment are used to ensure high levels of case ascertainment. These include physician notifications, pathology and cytology reports, and hospitalization, mortality and autopsy records.
  • Quality control is an important part of cancer registration in Manitoba.
  • The Manitoba Cancer Registry also collects results of the estrogen/progesterone receptor (ER/PR) assay for the province and supports the Breast Tumor Bank in conjunction with the University of Manitoba.
  • The Manitoba epidemiologists' main source of cancer information is the Manitoba Cancer Registry, which has been in operation since the 1930s, but part of Epidemiology and Cancer Registry since 1998.
